BNWAS stands for “Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System.” It is a safety system used on ships and vessels to monitor the presence and alertness of the officer or crew responsible for navigation on the bridge. The primary purpose of the BNWAS is to enhance maritime safety by ensuring that there is always a vigilant watchkeeper on the bridge, especially during long or monotonous voyages.
Key features and functions of a BNWAS system typically include
- Watchkeeping Supervision : The BNWAS continuously monitors the activity on the bridge, particularly the presence and actions of the watch officer. It ensures that the officer remains alert and active during their watch.
- Movement and Interaction Detection : The system uses sensors, such as infrared detectors or pressure-sensitive mats, to detect the presence and movement of the watch officer on the bridge. It can also detect if the officer interacts with the ship’s navigation equipment, such as the steering wheel or navigation controls.
- Alerts and Alarms : If the BNWAS detects a lack of activity or interaction from the watch officer within a specified time frame (e.g., 3-12 minutes, depending on regulations), it activates a series of alarms and alerts. These alarms can include audible alarms, visual warnings, and even automatic communication to the ship’s control center.
- Override and Acknowledgment : In case the watch officer is momentarily occupied but still attentive, the system typically allows for manual acknowledgment or override of the alarm to prevent unnecessary alerts.
- Integration : BNWAS systems are integrated with the ship’s other navigational and safety equipment, such as radar, GPS, and communication systems, to enhance situational awareness and provide a complete safety package.
The BNWAS is a crucial safety measure in the maritime industry, as it helps prevent accidents resulting from a lack of vigilance on the bridge, which can occur due to factors like fatigue, distraction, or monotony during long voyages. Regulations from organizations like the International Maritime Organization (IMO) require the installation of BNWAS on certain types of vessels to ensure compliance with safety standards and prevent navigational accidents.
