- Watchkeeping Supervision : The BNWAS continuously monitors the activity on the bridge, particularly the presence and actions of the watch officer. It ensures that the officer remains alert and active during their watch.
- Movement and Interaction Detection : The system uses sensors, such as infrared detectors or pressure-sensitive mats, to detect the presence and movement of the watch officer on the bridge. It can also detect if the officer interacts with the ship’s navigation equipment, such as the steering wheel or navigation controls.
- Alerts and Alarms : If the BNWAS detects a lack of activity or interaction from the watch officer within a specified time frame (e.g., 3-12 minutes, depending on regulations), it activates a series of alarms and alerts.
